Motor Graders Gearbox Use and Maintenance Guide

Publication Date: 2025-02-07 Back

As an important engineering machinery and equipment, the performance and status of the motor grader's gearbox has a vital impact on the overall operating efficiency and service life of the equipment. The following will introduce in detail the oil level checking, oil requirements and temperature requirements of the motor grader gearbox, as well as the relevant specifications of the gearbox operation.

First, the motor grader gearbox oil level checking

The checking of the motor grader transmission oil level needs to follow certain steps and requirements. First of all, park the vehicle in a flat place, and put the transmission shift handle in neutral position “N”. Ensure that the operating temperature of the transmission is within the normal range and that the engine is at idle, at a speed of approximately 1000 r/min. Next, loosen the dipstick counterclockwise, remove it and wipe it clean. Then, insert the dipstick into the fuel filler tube and screw it tightly into place, then loosen it and remove it.

Steps 5 and 6 should be repeated at least 2 times in order to ensure the accuracy of the test. At 40, the oil level should be between the lower scale COLD and the middle scale; while at 80, the oil level should be between the upper scale HOT and the middle scale. It is worth noting that the inspection method of motor grader gearbox oil level is different from that of bulldozer, so special attention should be paid to the inspection.

Second, grader transmission oil requirements and use of temperature requirements

Grader hydraulic transmission should use No. 8 hydraulic transmission oil, No. 6 oil is not recommended. In addition, you can also choose to meet the SAE15W-40 standard transmission oil. It is important that the hydraulic transmission never allow the use of ordinary gear oil or motor oil as transmission and lubricating oil, because unclean or non-compliant oil will cause the transmission to work abnormally. The lubricating oil temperature monitored in the cab should be the outlet oil temperature of the torque converter, which should not exceed 120°C maximum. The normal operating oil temperature should be between 80 and 100 to ensure the best performance and life of the transmission.

Third, motor grader speed change operation requirements

The following specifications need to be followed when the motor grader speed change operation is carried out: The gear change should be carried out in sequence. The scope of application of the gear change is as follows: 1 and 2 gears are suitable for operation, hill climbing or uneven road surface; while 3, 4, 5 and 6 gears are suitable for flat road surface or high speed driving.

When changing gears, do not increase the throttle to avoid excessive impact on the transmission system. In order to improve the comfort of the driver and maximize the life of the power components, be sure to slow down the brakes when changing gears. It is not necessary to stop the car or step on the brake pedal when changing gears while driving. When changing from low speed to high speed, first release the throttle and manipulate the speed change handle at the same time, then step on the throttle; when changing from high speed to low speed, first release the throttle and slowly decelerate before shifting gears.

Motor Graders Gearbox Use and Maintenance Guide

The use and maintenance of the motor grader gearbox need to strictly follow the relevant specifications and requirements. Through correct oil level checking, selection of suitable transmission oil and standardized speed change operation, it can ensure the best performance and life of motor grader gearbox, so as to improve the working efficiency and reliability of the equipment.
